Grant Hood Contracting – Papatahora Wetlands Restoration Project

Grant Hood Contracting is proud to have successfully completed a significant environmental restoration and infrastructure upgrade project at the Papatahora Wetlands, located upstream from Te Pā o Moki in Canterbury. This project reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting sustainable land and waterway management practices, working in close partnership with local iwi and environmental stakeholders.

Scope of Works

The project involved a series of targeted earthworks and construction activities designed to restore natural stream functions, improve water quality, and enhance public access to the wetland environment. Key components included:

Re-battering of Stream Banks

Targeted sections of the Papatahora Stream were re-battered to stabilise the stream banks and reduce erosion. This work supports improved flow management and habitat restoration.

Construction of Sediment Traps

Two sediment traps were constructed and installed within the stream to capture runoff and prevent sediment from entering downstream waterways, including the culturally significant Te Waikēkēwai Stream.

Sediment Removal

• Existing sediment build-up was carefully removed along stretches of the Papatahora Stream to restore natural flow and improve water quality.

Bridge Replacement

• The existing timber bridge located just upstream of the confluence with Te Waikēkēwai Stream was replaced with a new, more durable structure, improving both access and environmental resilience.

Boardwalk and Viewing Deck Construction

• A timber boardwalk was constructed along the edge of the wetland, providing safe access for visitors and minimising impact on sensitive ecosystems. A viewing deck adjacent to the boardwalk allows for educational and recreational use of the site, promoting greater community connection with the natural environment.

Environmental and Cultural Sensitivity

Throughout the project, Grant Hood Contracting worked with environmental advisors and local mana whenua to ensure the protection of culturally significant sites and native biodiversity. The careful planning and execution of works reflect a collaborative approach to restoring the mauri (life force) of the wetland and surrounding waterways.
